Type and Media is a master’s course in typeface design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK) . In the first semester students have several modules to complete that are interspersed with a set of enlightening workshops covered by guest lecturers. During the second semester, students focus on their thesis project. This site showcases the final projects of the class of 2020.

Gesto

Gesto is a type system that explores the expressiveness of a specific tool, the brush, while questioning the classic constructions of uppercase and lowercase. Two optical sizes represent the beating heart of the typeface: Grande and Piccolo. Thin entry and exit strokes combined with a low contrast characterize Grande by creating a sharp and dark texture with strong dynamism. Designed to work at huge sizes. Piccolo, on the other hand, translates these ingredients into text sizes, emphasizing features that must be visible at smaller scales, and filtering out anything that would create unnecessary noise. Taking inspiration from the Italian legacy, Gesto winks at a more contemporary aesthetic.
